History and Development of the Bavarian Bibliography
The origins of the "Bayerische Bibliographie" date back to the year 1927, the foundation year of the Committee for Bavarian Regional History ("Kommission für Bayerische Landesgeschichte") of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
The early years up to 1958/61
The committee commissioned the historian Wilhelm Krag already in 1927 to provide an annual overview of the most important new publications on Bavarian history. The Committee for Bavarian Regional History and the Society for Franconian History ("Gesellschaft für Fränkische Geschichte") took care of the regular publication of this bibliography in the "Zeitschrift für bayerische Landesgeschichte" (journal for Bavarian regional history) founded in 1928. In the years 1928 to 1941/42 the report years 1927 to 1940/41 were published under the heading "Literarische Jahresrundschau" (annual literary overview). Due to a lack of personnel, rationing of the paper resources and destroyed machines the "Literarische Jahresrundschau" was discontinued for the time being in 1943.
After a pause of ten years Wilhelm Krag was again in a position to publish the title material, which had become rather voluminous in the meantime. The years of publication from 1951/52 to 1961 of the "Zeitschrift für bayerische Landesgeschichte" contained the register of literature on Bavarian history of the years 1942-1949 ("Verzeichnis des Schrifttums zur bayerischen Geschichte der Jahre 1942-1949") and the annual bibliography ("Jahresbibliographie") for the report years 1950 to 1958.
There is no author register for the years of publication 1927 to 1958. From 1988 to 1995 Renate Wiese produced an alphabetic register of Krag's literature registers.
The Bavarian Bibliography 1959/66 to 1987/95
By way of continuation of the annual bibliography the "Bayerische Bibliographie" was published as of 1966. This bibliography now contained all the published literature relating to Bavaria since the year 1959, thus not only publications from the field of history.
At the start the Bavarian Bibliography was published in the form of a supplement to the "Zeitschrift für bayerische Landesgeschichte" (journal for Bavarian regional history). Up to the report year 1968/70 (published in 1977) it was edited by the Kommission für bayerische Landesgeschichte (committee for Bavarian regional history) and the directorate general of the Bavarian public libraries. The editors were Michael Renner (report years 1959-1963), Franziska Stadler (1964-1967) and finally Willy Albrecht (1968-1970).
With the report year 1971 (published in 1978) the directorate general of the Bavarian public libraries took over the project under their sole responsibility. Renate Wiese became editor.
Conversion to online publication in 1996
The compilation of bibliographic registers in the traditional way without computers could no longer keep up with the growing number of new publications. The volumes for the report years 1986 and 1987 were therefore published with a delay of ten and twelve years. At the same time regional bibliographies existed in most Bavarian administrative districts, which were much more up to date.
In 1996 therefore a fresh start was made. The Bavarian Bibliography became a joint venture of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and several university and public libraries. The bibliographic work was recommenced, now online, leaving the report gap of the years 1988-1995 for the time being. This backlog has by now almost been cleared.
The titles of the Bavarian Bibliography are available online in the "Gateway Bayern" in an up-to-date version, and additionally in the bibliography OPAC that is updated on a monthly basis. The parallel print version was discontinued as of the report year 2000.
Regional Bibliographies
Up to the re-organisation of the Bavarian Bibliography there were several regional bibliographic projects. Most of them were based on an administrative district (Regierungsbezirk), with Upper Bavaria and Middle Franconia not having a regional bibliography. The bibliographies were compiled at regional public or university libraries. Since 1996 the work on the Bavarian Bibliography and the regional bibliographies has been coordinated. Some regional bibliographies are still published in print. With the exception of the Lower Franconian bibliography these valuable aids are not available online so far.
Upper Palatinate
Since 1926 regular reports on new publications on the history and regional studies of the Upper Palatinate ("Neuerscheinungen zur Geschichte und Landeskunde der Oberpfalz") were published in the minutes of the meetings of the Historical Association for the Upper Palatinate and Regensburg ("Verhandlungen des Historischen Vereins für Oberpfalz und Regensburg"). In 1963 the public library of Regensburg took over the work on this bibliography of the Upper Palatinate ("Oberpfalzbibliographie"). With the report year 1990 the task was taken over by the university library of Regensburg.
Since 1996 the title material of the bibliography of the Upper Palatinate has been part of the Bavarian Bibliography. A parallel printed version is still published until today.
Im Jahr 2000 wurde für die Stadt Regensburg eine eigene Bibliographie erstellt, die in Buchform erschien und als laufend aktualisierte Internet-Datenbank fortgeführt wird.
Lower Bavaria
The journal edited by the institute for eastern Bavarian local history (Institut für Ostbairische Heimatforschung) with the title "Ostbairische Grenzmarken. Passauer Jahrbuch für Geschichte, Kunst und Volkskunde" ("Eastern Bavarian boundaries. Passau yearbook for history, the arts and folklore" – renamed in 2005: "Passauer Jahrbuch. Beiträge zur Geschichte und Kultur Ostbaierns" – "Passau yearbook. Articles on the history and culture of eastern Bavaria") in 1967 for the first time contained the column "recent publications on the history and regional studies of Lower Bavaria" ("Neuerscheinungen zur Geschichte und Landeskunde von Niederbayern") for the report year 1964/65. This annual bibliography is still compiled independently of the Bavarian Bibliography today and is still published in print only.
Swabia
For the administrative district of Swabia a regional bibliography has been compiled since 1950. At the beginning it was published in the Swabian journal for the maintenance of regional traditions and popular education ("Schwäbische Blätter für Heimatpflege und Volksbildung"), and since 1971 has been published in the journal of the historical association for Swabia ("Zeitschrift des Historischen Vereins für Schwaben"). The parallel print version ("Neues Schrifttum zur Landeskunde Bayerisch-Schwabens" – "New literature on the regional studies of Bavarian Swabia") was also maintained after 1996. Up to 1974 the bibliography took account only of monographs. Only then did the editors start to also include journal articles and contributions to omnibus works.

Franconia
The relevant literature up to 1945 is contained in the "Fränkische Bibliographie. Schrifttumsnachweis zur historischen Landeskunde Frankens" ("Franconian bibliography. Literature register on historical regional studies of Franconia") that was published in four volumes from 1965 to 1978. More recent literature is partly contained in the regional bibliographies of the individual administrative districts

Lower Franconia
The Lower Franconian bibliography for the report years 1963-1997 was published annually in the yearbook for history and the arts of the Mainfranken region ("Mainfränkisches Jahrbuch für Geschichte und Kunst"). The title records have been entered in the Bavarian Bibliography since the report year 1996. The Lower Franconian bibliography is edited by the university library of Würzburg.
The title records of the years 1962-1987 have meanwhile been published in the form of a separate online edition. The titles of the report gap from 1946 (discontinuation of the Franconian bibliography) to 1961 (start of the Lower Franconian bibliography) will be added to the Bavarian Bibliography step by step.
Upper Franconia
In Upper Franconia the Historical Association of Bamberg (Historischer Verein Bamberg) compiled a bibliography on the history of the city and bishopric of Bamberg ("Bibliographie zur Geschichte von Stadt und Hochstift Bamberg") up to 1996. This bibliography was published for the first time in 1980, covering the report years 1945-1975, and then at an interval of around five years covering the years 1981-1995. New publications as of 1996 are contained in the Bavarian Bibliography.
Coburg
In Coburg, which was affiliated to Bavaria in 1920, the regional library of Coburg in 1976 started compiling the literature from and on Coburg (the "Coburgensia") systematically in the "Coburger Bibliographie". This bibliography was published annually for the report years 1976-2004 in the yearbook of the Coburger Landesstiftung foundation ("Jahrbuch der Coburger Landesstiftung"). Since 1999 the titles have been included in the Bavarian Bibliography.
