During his time as the Prince-Bishop of Freising (since 1695) Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing und Liechteneck (1649-1727) could no longer pursue his historical studies to the extent that he had grown used to.
In 1713 he therefore entrusted his privy and chamber counsellor Johann Michael Wilhelm von Prey zu Straßkirchen (1690 to 1747) with the historical and genealogical research, to enable him to finish the register. In 1720 Eckher had ten volumes copied and illustrated. They are registered in the catalogue of the bishop's reference library of 1726, but are deemed lost today, which renders the documentation of the preliminary work (Cgm 2268 to 2271) held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek all the more valuable.
