The "Historischer Verein für Schwaben" ("Historical Association for Swabia") belongs to the most long-standing historical associations on the level of the administrative regions, which were founded at the initiative of king Louis I of Bavaria during the first half of the 19th century. Founded in 1834, the association started publishing the "Zeitschrift des Historischen Vereins für Schwaben und Neuburg" ("Journal of the historical association for Swabia and Neuburg") in 1874. The journal had several predecessors and was renamed "Zeitschrift des Historischen Vereins für Schwaben" ("Journal of the historical association for Swabia") in 1941.

The journal contains articles on the history of the complete Bavarian part of Swabia, however clearly focusing on the history of the city of Augsburg.
