The special person search facility of the Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online has the advantage in comparison to conventional full-text search that the registered persons are unequivocally identified by means of the nine-digit ID number of the Personennamendatei der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (personal name file of the German national library). The PND ID allows for establishing further, sustainable links beyond BLO.
Various biographic encyclopaedias have been indexed for person search on the basis of the PND ID. Currently the following resources can be searched:

Bayerisches Musiker-Lexikon Online (BMLO – Bavarian Online Encyclopaedia of Musicians)

Karl Bosl, Bosls Bayerische Biographie. Regensburg 1983/1988 ("Bosl's Bavarian Biography": main volume - supplement)
Furthermore all persons mentioned in the project descriptions of the BLO and in the Historisches Lexikon Bayerns (Historical Encyclopaedia of Bavaria) are identified on the basis of the PND ID.
Work on the project is still in progress. It is planned to integrate further resources.

The "Wirkungsbereich" ("field of activities") describes the activities of a person on account of which this person figures in one of the resources. In contrast, "Tätigkeiten" ("occupations") denominates the concrete profession of a person. For example Philipp Apian is recorded in the "Bayerisches Künstlerlexikon" ("Bavarian Encyclopaedia of Artists") of 1810 on account of his map of Bavaria, i.e. on account of his artistic activities. In addition, also his occupancies as a physician and mathematician are mentioned, however which were not decisive for the entry in the encyclopaedia.

When a name is input in the "name" field, the records for both first names and surnames are searched. In the case that you wish to search for a first name and last name, kindly type the names in the following order: "surname, first name".

When searching for names the asterisk (*) can be used as a wildcard for any number of characters. Entering "Schmi*" will for example yield all persons with similar surnames, such as Schmid, Schmidt, Schmitt, etc. In the case that no wildcard is input, one is automatically added at the end of the search term.

Also when searching for the occupancy, the asterisk (*) can be used as a wildcard for any number of characters. In the case that no wildcard is input, one is automatically added both at the start and at the end of the search term.

On the basis of the personal name further searches are possible on the homepage of the BLO, the Bayerischen Bibliographie (Bavarian Bibliography) and in the image archive of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
- In case the person is mentioned in the Historisches Lexikon Bayerns (Historical Encyclopaedia of Bavaria), the user is provided with a link to the encyclopaedia.
