Manuscripts (Books kept by Authorities and Deeds) from the Bayerisches Haupstaatsarchiv Manuscripts

The Digitisation Centre of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) digitised several important medieval manuscripts from the holdings of the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv (Bavaria Main Public Archives) in 2006, among them the Falkenstein codex and the Freising manuscripts. Further old cartularies and books kept by the prince-bishopric of Freising will be added in the course of time. The digital collection is started with the Freising manuscripts and the Codex Falkensteinensis.

The Bavaria Main Public Archives are the central archive in charge of the Free State of Bavaria and of the former Duchy, Electorate and Kingdom of Bavaria. It holds the following collections:

  • The collections of the former central archives and central authorities of Old Bavaria and Palatinate-Neuburg, the surviving documents of Electoral Palatinate and Palatinate-Zweibrücken which remained with Bavaria, the collections of the archives of the clerical and temporal territories in the Bavarian Imperial Circle transferred to Bavaria within the framework of the secularisation and mediatisation at the beginning of the 19th century, except for the collections of the Upper Palatinate (Abt. I Ältere Bestände - Division I Older Collections)

  • Files of the Bavarian state ministries and other regional authorities in charge of overall Bavaria since around 1800 (Abt. II Neuere Bestände - Division II Newer Collections)

  • Miscellaneous holdings grouped according to subject pertinence, predominantly originating in central authorities of the Electoral Palatinate and the Kingdom of Bavaria, relating to the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty, as well as the papers handed over by members of the royal house (Abt. III Geheimes Hausarchiv - Division III Secret House Archive)

  • the records of the former Bavarian army from the 17th century to 1919 (Abt. IV Kriegsarchiv - Division IV War Archive)

  • Non-public archived items, such as political modern papers, written materials of institutions, parties, associations as well as collection items such as placards, flyers, printed matter, etc. (Abt. V Nachlässe und Sammlungen - Division V Modern Papers and Collections)

This online offer is a cooperation project of the Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online, the central arts and humanities portal on the history and culture of Bavaria, and the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv (Bavaria Main Public Archives).
