Liber...censualium: Digital Edition - Marginal Notes: Introduction

Liber censualium: fol.27v with the oldest dated marginal note (1242).Liber censualium: fol.27v with the oldest dated marginal note (1242).

Zur deutschen Fassung

The base text of the Liber censualium (LC) was supplemented on pages 2-11, 12-25v, 27-30v, 31v and 34r-v with marginalia, which were composed by different hands.  This base text is comprised mainly of rows of the names of later Freising Zensualen (rent-paying dependents), the status of whose property was supposed to be updated.  In addition, some donation notices, which were not included in the main text, were entered on the lower margin of the pages.  These donation notices, by contrast with the rows of names, are partly dated, the oldest of which dates to 1242 (f. 27v, TF 1801) and the youngest to 1264 (f. 13v, TF 1811). For Theodor Bitterauf, these dates served as the termini for establishing the chonological range of the names and the undated donation notices, which he had edited summarily according to particulars in the folios under the number 1802 (TF 1802). However, no dates are to be found in these entries.  Bitterauf selected and differentiated the dated donation notices written on the lower margins of the LC according to the schema of chronological sequencing usual at that time, thus editing them without regard to context.

Internal links between the main text of the LC and the marginalia arise only occasionally.  Frequently the space was filled out with the intention to add a small text into the compendium.  This becomes clear in the entries made on the lower margins of pages, on f. 3v-4, f. 5v-6, f. 21v-22 and f. 22v-23.
